Thomas Robert Simmons, age 56, of Twin City, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro following an extended illness. A Celebration of Life was held Tuesday, September 24, at 11 a.m. Elam Baptist Church at Elam Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Wilson and Rev. Jody Bryant officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, September 23, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Thomas was born May 10, 1968, in Statesboro, to the late Alton and Nancy Simmons. He graduated from Emanuel County Institute in 1986. Thomas married his wife, Sandra, and began work at Wallace Computer to begin his early years. Then in 2000, he took a huge leap of faith as he answered the call to ministry, leaving everything else behind. Thomas became ordained and began pastoring in local churches. He obtained a master’s degree in theological studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary to help aid his ministry work. Thomas was a member of Elam Baptist Church. He was known for his "jack of all trades" talent, whether fixing something broken or building something new, he could do it all. Thomas’ love for whitetail deer taxidermy became a cherished hobby that he enjoyed for over 30 years. In 2023, he received third place in the state Taxidermy Association contest. Thomas was a wholesome family man who loved simple get-togethers with the ones he loved. His kind and generous spirit touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting mark on the community he served. Thomas’ legacy of faith, love, and service will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Mr. Simmons is preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Simmons is survived by his faithful wife of 35 years, Sandra Simmons; their four children, Macy Moxley (Justin), Cody Simmons (Amanda), Gaven Simmons and Katelyn Simmons; four cherished grandchildren, Robert Owen, Avery Moxley, Colton Simmons and Blakely Simmons; two brothers, Rusty Simmons (Wanda) and Marcus Simmons (Melinda); and several nieces and nephews.
