Varsity Lady Tigers bounce back after tough loss

The Swainsboro Lady Tigers varsity flag football team had a busy week last week, facing Long County on Tuesday, October 22, and Appling County on Saturday, October 26. The two games gave the team both challenges and opportunities to show growth as the season continues.

The week began with a hard-fought game against Long County. Swainsboro fell 6-0, but Head Coach Alexandria Walden saw the game as an important learning experience for her players. She said the game showed that the team still has areas to improve, especially when it comes to finishing drives and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. At the same time, the effort and determination of the players were very encouraging.

“The Long County game showed us our potential even though we did not get the win,” Walden said. “It was a game where we had to look closely at our performance and understand what it takes to get better. The girls accepted the challenge. They listened, worked hard in practice, and were ready to improve.”

The Lady Tigers carried the lessons from that loss into their next game on Saturday. Swainsboro faced Appling County and came away with a 7-0 victory. Coach Walden said the team played with better energy and communication. The players trusted each other and the system, and the improvements were visible on both offense and defense.

“Our energy and focus were completely different in the Appling County game,” Walden said. “It was a team effort. Everyone bought in and made the necessary adjustments. That is exactly the kind of growth we want to see from this team.”

Walden highlighted a few players who made key contributions. She noted that Kay Swilley has been improving in passing consistency, and freshman McKinley Walden has shown raw talent on both sides of the ball. Both players gave the team added versatility and impact.

The coach said she is proud of how the team is developing. The players are learning from their mistakes and becoming more disciplined and cohesive as a unit. She said she wants the Lady Tigers to continue becoming more competitive, aggressive, and ready for any challenge that comes their way.

The team now turns its focus to an important week of region games. Swainsboro will face Emanuel County Institute and Portal on Tuesday, followed by a road game at Claxton on Thursday, October 31. Because these games take place after press time, full coverage and results will be featured in next week’s edition of The Forest Blade.
