Swainsboro Tigers turn early struggles into big victory

The Swainsboro Tigers traveled to Savannah last Friday to face Savannah Country Day in their first matchup against a private school opponent in the region. The game was played at Saunders Field on the campus of Savannah Country Day Academy. Competing in GHSA Region Three A Division One, the Tigers’ region includes five schools: three public schools—Swainsboro, Tombs, and Vidalia—and two private schools—Savannah Country Day and Savannah Christian Preparatory.

The overcast evening started slowly for the Tigers. Consecutive three-and-out drives early on allowed the Hornets to strike first. A miscommunication in the Swainsboro secondary led to a big pass and a short run inside the five-yard line, putting Savannah Country Day up seven to nothing.

Swainsboro’s first spark of the night came on defense. Early in the second quarter, as the Hornets threatened to score again inside the five, the Tigers forced a fumble and recovered it in the end zone. The defensive play energized the team, but the offense stalled on the next drive, allowing the Hornets to extend their lead to fourteen to nothing.

The Tigers began to find their rhythm midway through the second quarter. Quarterback Joshua Gray connected with senior tight end Marcus Watkins across the middle for Swainsboro’s first touchdown, cutting the deficit to fourteen to seven. The defense then forced a three-and-out, giving the offense another opportunity. On the next drive, junior Marco Danford turned a screen pass into a touchdown with a dazzling spin move, tying the game at fourteen.

Just before halftime, junior defensive end Christian Tarver blocked a punt attempt by the Hornets. Danford scooped the ball and sprinted to the end zone, giving the Tigers a twenty-one to fourteen lead at the break and capping a twenty-one unanswered point run.

The Tigers carried that momentum into the second half, scoring three more touchdowns to close out the game with a final score of forty-two to fourteen. Highlights included a rushing touchdown by Daveyhon Williams, another receiving touchdown by Marco Danford, and two interceptions in the secondary. Junior free safety Aaron McCastle returned his first career interception for a touchdown, and junior Shannon Benjamin added another interception late in the game to secure the win.

The team left early to travel to Savannah for a pregame meal before the game. Coach Roberts explained, “We were on fall break Friday, so we did not have to worry about the kids missing class. We left earlier than normal because of some worries about traffic, and you also have to find a restaurant in the time period you want the guys to eat and still be able to make it to the stadium on time. Sometimes, all of those factors do not mesh exactly like you would like, and you end up giving yourself a little more time.”

Regarding the sluggish start, Coach Roberts said, “We just had to wake up. We made about every terrible mistake you could make in the first quarter. I did not have them ready to play at kickoff, and that is my responsibility. I will make sure it gets fixed.”

Looking ahead to the region matchup against Vidalia, he emphasized focus and execution. “Vidalia and Swainsboro is a huge rivalry, and both sides take it seriously. We are still not executing the way I want to see offensively or defensively, so we are working on improving in those areas. Every game is extremely important for our playoff picture, and we are not taking any breaks, even during fall break.”

The Tigers look to continue their strong season, and Tiger Nation is encouraged to come out and show support. Swainsboro will host their final home game of the regular season against rival and Region Four opponent Vidalia this Friday night at 7:30. Kickoff is at 7:30 at Tiger Field. Tiger Nation, come out and support the team as they aim to build momentum heading into their final regular-season game and the upcoming playoffs.
