We’ve Got Pumpkins!!

Posted

It’s that time of year again and second grade students at Twin City Elementary have adopted “baby pumpkins”. They had to care for them around the clock for a week.

Students were asked to pick out two names, one for a boy and one for a girl. Each class had a set of twins which required double the care. They wouldn’t know what gender their pumpkin would have until it was delivered. The school nurse, Lindsey Newsome, came by each classroom and delivered each pumpkin. The students were so surprised with their newborn and some were a little disappointed in the outcome, but nevertheless, they cared for it each day and night.

During the week, students were asked to write in a journal, sharing news about how they spent their evening away from school with their newborn. If students had extracurricular activities, they were required to get a babysitter for their pumpkin. At the end of the week, if their pumpkin was still alive, well taken care of and their journal full, students were given a birth certificate that included a parent’s thumbprint and their newborn “pumpkin print”.

Students had such wonderful stories each day to share with the class. They brought them in baby doll carriers, strollers, boxes, baskets and blankets. The teachers’ main goal for this project was to teach students about responsibility. Students in Mrs. Judy Gay, Mrs. Wanda Simmons and Mrs. Anna Kate Willoughby’s classes have really taken their parental responsibilities serious. They provided great care and the school is proud to announce that all pumpkins survived the week!
