Friday, February 26, marked the day for Twin City’s Centennial Kick-off event, celebrating 100 years of the city’s establishment since the 1921 merging of two cities, Graymont and Summit. The event began at 11 a.m. at the Charlie Oglesby Welcome Center and concluded at approximately 12 p.m. following a tour of the city’s renovated old jail.
Twin City Mayor Matt Donaldson welcomed all and expressed his appreciation to those who came to the event. Emanuel County Institute JROTC Cadets presented the colors, Mayor Pro Tem Jule Bady, Jr. led in invocation, and Twin City Police Chief Hank Whiters sang the national anthem. Featured speakers at the event included Mayor Donaldson and Emanuel County Historic Preservation Society’s George and Missy Elder, who gave historical background information of Twin City, as well as Graymont and Summit. Representing District 23, Georgia State Senator Max Burns made a special appearance at the centennial event, but had to leave prior to the event beginning to respond to urgent business in Atlanta.
The centennial kick-off hosted individuals throughout the county and surrounding areas and highlighted family members of past Twin City mayors. An unveiling of the city’s centennial mural to be placed on the old city jail was also showcased. Prior to the conclusion of the program, Mayor Donaldson gave special recognition to Twin City resident, John Fowler, and his wife for volunteering their time to perform the renovation work of the old jail. In doing so, Mayor Donaldson publicly appointed Fowler as Twin City Historian before inviting all in attendance to a walk-thru of the city jail. A small reception followed consisting of Brunswick stew, cheeseburger sliders, cake and refreshments.
