The Swainsboro Tigers boys’ basketball was tested early but finished strong Friday night inside The Den, pulling away late for a hard-fought 65–51 region victory over Toombs County.

The Bulldogs came out aggressive from the opening tip, knocking down several three-pointers and jumping on Swainsboro early. Their hot shooting created an early cushion and forced the Tigers to play from behind, something the home crowd did not expect on a night that was supposed to favor Swainsboro. Toombs County’s confidence from deep kept pressure on the Tigers throughout the opening quarter, but Swainsboro refused to let the game slip away.

As the first half unfolded, the Tigers settled in defensively and began to slow the Bulldogs’ perimeter attack. That adjustment opened the door for Swainsboro’s offense to find its rhythm. Senior guard Lj Morgan led the charge, scoring from all three levels and providing a steady presence when the Tigers needed it most. Morgan finished the night with a game-high 22 points, delivering timely baskets that helped Swainsboro regain momentum and take control heading into the second half.

Swainsboro’s balance proved to be the difference as the game wore on. Franklyn Barnes made his presence felt in the paint, finishing with 12 points while anchoring the defense with six rebounds and four blocks. The Tigers fed off their defensive stops, turning them into transition opportunities that slowly widened the gap on the scoreboard.

By the fourth quarter, Swainsboro’s composure took over. The Tigers tightened up defensively, limited second-chance opportunities, and closed the game at the free-throw line to secure the region win in front of the home crowd.

After the game, head coach Brice Hobbs praised his team’s resilience and growth. He said the early shooting surge from Toombs County tested his players, but he was proud of how they stayed connected and trusted one another. Hobbs noted that his team did not panic, made the necessary defensive adjustments, and executed when it mattered most. He added that the win reflected the work his players have put in behind the scenes and the belief they have in each other.

Due to winter weather and unsafe road conditions that impacted the area over the weekend, Swainsboro’s scheduled games against Statesboro High School were canceled and will not be rescheduled. The Tigers will return to action on Wednesday at home against Savannah Country Day, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. inside The Den.

Following Wednesday’s matchup, Swainsboro will travel Friday to face Savannah Christian before returning home Saturday for a special Senior Night matchup against Claxton, with the varsity boys game scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Senior recognition will take place between the varsity girls and varsity boys games, honoring a group of seniors who have dedicated countless hours to the program and represented Swainsboro with pride. Tiger Nation is encouraged to pack The Den and help celebrate their commitment and legacy.
