The Swainsboro Tigers wrapped up their regular season Friday night with a challenging 45-19 loss to Savannah Christian on the road. From the opening kickoff, the Red Raiders set the pace. They struck quickly and left the Tigers playing catch-up.

Savannah Christian scored on the very first play, taking a 7-0 lead. The Tigers’ offense could not respond on their first possession and went three-and-out. The Red Raiders quickly added another touchdown to push the score to 14-0. It took some time for Swainsboro to find its rhythm.

By the second quarter, the Tigers began to settle in. Quarterback Josh Gray led a drive from their own 20-yard line and connected with wide receiver Jayden Wilcher on a huge gain that took the Tigers down to the Savannah Christian 10-yard line. A quick pass from Gray to Shannon Benjamin in the back of the end zone brought the Tigers on the board, closing the gap to 14-7.

Swainsboro’s defense gave the Tigers a boost later in the quarter when Savannah Christian drove inside the one-yard line. The Tiger defense held firm on fourth down, forcing a turnover on downs. The offense struck quickly again with Gray finding Marco Danford for a solid gain, moving the Tigers into opponent territory. Turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Savannah Christian to capitalize and score another touchdown under a minute before halftime. This made the score 21-7 at the break.

The Tigers came out of the half with renewed energy. A strong kickoff return by Danford set up a drive that eventually saw Gray run in a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-14. Swainsboro seemed poised to rally, but the Red Raiders continued to move the ball effectively and scored multiple times. Daveyhon Williams added a late touchdown for Swainsboro, closing the scoring at 45-19.

Despite the loss, Coach Roberts reflected candidly on the game and the season ahead. “I didn’t coach very well. I have to be better at getting our kids ready to play and we are working on that right now,” he said. When asked about standout performers, he noted, “Ja’bios Smith played well on defense after being out several weeks. I am glad we were able to get him some action before this long layoff. Jayden Wilcher played well on offense and has gotten better over the course of the year.”

Looking back at the season as a whole, Roberts emphasized both growth and opportunity. “We did not play our best football in our last game, but we have the opportunity to fix some things in the next few weeks. We always want to be playing our best football when the playoffs start. We are excited about some of the big wins we had this year, but a team’s legacy is built in the playoffs.”

With the state playoffs beginning November 14, Roberts and his staff are focusing on using the upcoming bye week and the GHSA-mandated dead week wisely. “We are focusing on healing bodies and staying in shape,” he said. He also stressed the areas the team needs to refine before postseason play. “Everything. Everything is magnified in the playoffs. Undisciplined penalties, turnovers, everything. We have to play great complimentary football and be sound in every area.”

When asked about the locker room mindset heading into the playoffs, Roberts expressed confidence. “We are built for this time of year. We have no other option but to respond to the challenge every Friday night. All we are worried about is being the best football team in the stadium on November 14th. That is all we can control. Otherwise, we have wasted a great season, and we begin getting the next team ready.”

Though the regular season ended with a tough loss in Savannah, the Tigers are focused on turning lessons learned into playoff success. With determination and discipline at the forefront, Swainsboro hopes to carry the momentum of growth and preparation into November’s postseason.
