Tiger Football Seniors embark on their last ride, round one this Friday

For the senior class of the Swainsboro Tigers, Friday night marks the beginning of their final playoff journey together. I spoke with the team’s senior captains — Aiden Foskey, Peyton Mason, Maddox Robertson, and Marcus Watkins — and their focus is clear. Every practice, every rep, every play counts. This is their “Last Ride” as a senior group — a journey that could take them all the way to the state championship, but it starts with a single win or go home game. The Tigers have eight seniors on the roster this season, giving them experience and leadership as they embark on this postseason run. The other four seniors rounding out the class are Benjamin Hughes, Kason Edenfield, Eric Brown, and Elijah Linton.

Among the senior leaders, Aiden Foskey has recorded 54 total tackles and averages 6.0 tackles per game. Over the past three weeks, Foskey has focused on keeping the team sharp through stacked, high-quality practices. “What gives me the most confidence in this team is our drive to not stop until the job is complete. In multiple games during the season, we have been behind, but instead of giving up, we kept fighting and gave it our all,” Foskey said.

Coach Roberts praised the senior class’s preparation and focus heading into the playoffs. “We have had great practices for the last two weeks. I’ve been really pleased with how they have come to work. Everything builds to hopefully be playing your best football right now,” Roberts said.

Peyton Mason has been a reliable wide receiver, making crucial catches and providing key blocks that open up the run game. He emphasized the importance of fundamentals. “Our biggest goal during this break was to fix the little things and work on our fundamentals. We still have a goal that we must finish and to do that, we have to get better every practice,” Mason said.

Coach Roberts highlighted Mason’s role in keeping the team consistent and focused. “We have several with bumps and bruises that have been able to heal. Everyone has those this time of year. You just worry about being rusty after not playing for 3 weeks,” he said.

Maddox Robertson, the anchor of the offensive line at center, has been pivotal in calling protections and creating holes for the running backs. “During this time off I would say my message to the team is don’t take this opportunity for granted. As a senior I have been a part of a team that went to back-to-back state championships. Being a part of that is really fun, but we have to make sure we show up every day ready to get better,” Robertson said. His leadership provides the foundation for both the running and passing games, making him indispensable for the Tigers’ playoff push.

Marcus Watkins has contributed two receiving touchdowns and has been a constant presence in high-leverage situations. On leadership, he said, “Be blessed and thankful for this opportunity that we’ve been put in. A lot of teams are begging for one more shot at it on the field and here we are with a great opportunity in front of us, so make the most of it and play like it’s your last game.”

Coach Roberts reflected on what this senior class expects from themselves and the younger players. “All the year-round work everyone puts in is for this time of year. We all have to be at our best when our best is required and that’s what it takes in the playoffs. We just have to be the best team in the stadium this Friday night,” he said.

Swainsboro closed the regular season with an 8 2 overall record, and a 2 2 record in region play, outscoring opponents 281 to 223. With the senior class setting the tone, other contributors have stepped up to support them. Junior Ja’Bios Smith has rushed for 412 yards and averages 9.3 tackles per game, while junior Christian Tarver has recorded 42 total tackles and five sacks, anchoring the defensive line.

Junior Marco Danford has been one of the Tigers’ most versatile athletes. Danford has rushed for 442 yards on 66 carries, averaging 6.7 yards per carry, and totaled 12 touchdowns this season, including both rushing and receiving scores. As a receiver, he has 19 catches for 381 yards and multiple receiving touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Joshua Gray has thrown for 1,148 yards on 71 completions from 132 attempts, with a completion rate of 53.8 percent and a QB rating of 92.6. While his rushing numbers are modest with 12 carries for 19 yards, his passing yardage has been a critical piece of the Tigers’ offensive success this season. Supporting Gray and the Tigers’ run game, freshman Kyle Johnson has been the team’s workhorse running back, averaging nearly 60 rushing yards per game and providing balance that allows the offensive line to dominate.

The postseason bracket is now set. The Tigers are five rounds away from the state championship, beginning Friday with a first-round matchup against the Bacon County Red Raiders. The Red Raiders come in with a 5 5 record, presenting a challenge for Swainsboro, but the Tigers’ senior leadership and sharpened fundamentals will be tested from the first whistle.

Tiger Nation, now is the time to rally. Pack out Tiger Field this Friday, November 14, as the 12 seeded Tigers take on the 21 seeded Bacon County Red Raiders. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. The journey is just beginning, and this senior class is ready to lead the way.
