Tiger Nation, get ready: the Swainsboro Middle School Tigers are headed back to the playoffs for a high-stakes showdown with a familiar foe. After clinching a playoff spot two weeks ago with a hard-fought win over East Laurens, the Tigers spent last week regrouping and preparing for what promises to be a thrilling rematch against the Dublin Irish. With a bye week giving the team extra practice time, Coach Corey Chalker and his squad focused on sharpening fundamentals and getting ready for another physical battle on the field.
“First of all, we were extremely blessed with some football weather,” said Chalker. “We were able to have four good days of work without really knowing who we would be playing. I felt like the kids responded well.” The extra preparation allowed the Tigers to focus on fundamentals and get ready for the challenges ahead, no matter the opponent.
When asked about the playoff seeding, Coach Chalker explained that the top four teams in the region are 1) Bleckley, 2) Dublin, 3) Swainsboro, and 4) Jeff Davis. In the semifinals, the top seed faces the fourth seed, and the second seed plays the third seed, with the winners advancing to the championship at the higher-seeded school. “I think there are four talented football teams left, and it will be a toss-up on who wins the whole thing,” Chalker said. The Tigers, as the third seed, are ready to take on the challenge.
Swainsboro’s first playoff matchup is a rematch against Dublin, a team they faced earlier in the season in a narrow 20-18 loss at Tiger Field. This game also revisits last year’s championship showdown between the two schools, making it the third consecutive high-stakes encounter. Both the regular-season and championship meetings have been hard-fought, physical contests, and Chalker expects another intense battle. “I expect our kids to know how much we left on the table last time we played them,” he said. “We had a touchdown called back due to penalties, and I hope we are able to clean stuff like that up this go-round. We should understand the level of physicality it will take to be successful against our opponent.”
This Wednesday, the Tigers will take the field at a special 6:00 p.m. start at the historic Shamrock Bowl in Dublin, Georgia. The venue has its own history in the Swainsboro-Dublin rivalry. Earlier this season, the Dublin and Swainsboro high school teams opened the year there with a dramatic 15-14 victory for the Tigers over the Dublin Irish varsity squad. The SMS Tigers hope to capture a bit of that same magic and leave their mark on the iconic field.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Chalker emphasized discipline and preparation off the field as key to postseason success. “Our message is simple: do the right thing,” he explained. “We stress this to the kids daily. We are trying to help them understand that if they are able to be disciplined inside the school building, then it will bleed over into football. There is not a magic switch that you can flip in order to become disciplined. It is a process, and we are striving to get them there.”
Now, Tiger Nation is being called to action. Come out in full force Wednesday evening at the Shamrock Bowl to cheer on the SMS Tigers as they aim to turn a season-opening near miss into a playoff triumph. Let’s pack the stands, make some noise, and show Dublin exactly what Tiger Nation is all about!
