The Swainsboro Lady Tigers flag football team opened their 2025 season last Thursday with a dominant 38–0 win over Cross Creek, followed by a hard-fought 18–13 loss to Jefferson County. Despite the split results, Head Coach Alexandria Walden said she’s encouraged by what she saw from her team in both matchups.
“What stood out the most was how well we performed in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams,” Coach Walden said. “The team played in sync and executed smoothly, which was especially impressive for a season opener. I was particularly proud of the offense for effectively moving the ball down the field and putting points on the board.”
The Lady Tigers controlled the pace from start to finish in Game 1, showcasing their offensive rhythm and defensive discipline. However, in their second matchup against Jefferson County, things did not go quite as smoothly.
“In the second game, we were our own biggest obstacle,” Walden admitted. “Costly turnovers and unforced mistakes shifted the momentum, and we ultimately beat ourselves. Staying focused and locked in on our goals is essential moving forward. Team leadership and accountability also fell short in that matchup, though I commend the defense for continuing to fight and never giving up.”
Swainsboro threw three interceptions in the game against Jefferson County. Each proved costly in critical moments as the Tigers struggled to regain momentum. Still, the team’s defense held firm and allowed only one touchdown across both games, a point of pride for Coach Walden.
“That resilience is something to build on,” she said. “These performances show the potential this team has. If we continue to grow, play hard, and stay in sync, our future is very promising.”
Several players stood out in the opening games, including seniors Tameeyah Kingsberry, Hayden Burke, Kaylieana Swilley, Kylie Brown, and TraMyra Brown, who each made key plays on both sides of the ball. Sophomore Kandis Smith provided steady contributions on defense, while freshmen McKinley Walden and Isis Trice also made solid showings in their varsity debuts. Coach Walden credited the group’s communication and leadership for keeping the team competitive in both games.
“The team stepped up collectively, showing strong communication and working together to make impactful plays on both sides of the field,” Walden said. “Our seniors noted that the underclassmen truly rose to the occasion, demonstrating maturity and readiness in key moments.”
Reflecting on the lessons learned, Walden emphasized the importance of discipline and mindset. “Turnovers play a critical role in the outcome of a game and can often be the deciding factor between a win and a loss,” she said. “Emphasizing positive communication and accountability remains a priority, along with encouraging players to accept constructive criticism as a tool for growth. The team continues to work on being effective on both sides of the ball, with a strong focus on listening to the coaching staff, trusting the process, and staying coachable while staying committed to the game plan.”
As for the team’s overall outlook, Walden is optimistic about what lies ahead. “I’m proud of how confident and energized the girls are feeling,” she said. “This team is more competitive, and their mindset is focused on being the best they can be, building on last season’s foundation, and continuing to grow.”
The Lady Tigers now turn their attention to a busy stretch of home games. On Thursday, October 16, Swainsboro will host Jenkins (Savannah) at 5:00 p.m., followed by Warner Robins at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers will return to the field on Saturday, October 18, for a doubleheader against Josey (Augusta) at 10:00 a.m. and Westside (Augusta) at 2:00 p.m. They will wrap up the homestand on Tuesday, October 21, with a 5:00 p.m. matchup against Long County (Ludowici).
With a full slate ahead, the Lady Tigers are ready to build on their early momentum and continue developing as a team. Coach Walden and her players are calling on TIGERNATION to come out, fill the stands, and show their support as Swainsboro looks to keep the energy high throughout this home stretch.
