On Sunday afternoon, October 8, at 2:30 p.m., the Skunk Brigade, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, traveled to the Smyrna Baptist Church in Deepstep to participate in the Patriot Grave Marking for Patriot Joseph Ransome Avant. The event was sponsored by the Governor Jared Irwin Chapter, NSDAR, May and Smith Funeral Directors, Strickland Family and the Fall Line Chapter GASSAR. After the GASSAR Skunk Brigade Color Guard posted the colors, Regent Dorothy Price Reynolds welcomed everyone to the event and Sandra Dukes Avant gave a biography of Joseph Avant. The Marker was then unveiled. President of the Fall Line Chapter GASSAR Sandy Mercer then held the Laying of the Wreaths. At the end of the event, a three-round volley by the flintlock rifles and six-pounder cannons was held to honor Patriot Joseph Ransome Avant.
