The Swainsboro Lady Tigers flag football team honored their senior class this past Wednesday during their final home game of the regular season against Statesboro. The celebration recognized all of the team’s seniors: Jordi Armstrong, Kylie Brown, Tramyra Brown, Hayden Burke, Dazia Cuyler, Jalaya Freeman, Millie Kingsberry, Aa’caylah Murphy, Kaylieana Swilley, and Brittany Waters. These young women have been integral to the program, providing leadership, experience, and determination both on and off the field.
Coach Alexandria Walden highlighted the significance of this year’s senior class, saying, “This year’s group of seniors is the biggest I’ve had since we started the flag football program at SHS. They have great potential, but they must understand their roles and be able to adjust, not just in football, but in life. This season has had its highs and lows, but overall, it’s teaching real-life skills. There are great leaders among this group, and they must believe in themselves, trust God, and learn to handle criticism or things that don’t always go their way.”
The Lady Tigers enter the final week of the regular season with a 7 8 overall record and a 3 1 mark in region play, placing them third in D1 Area 4. Wednesday’s Senior Day matchup against Statesboro ended in a hard-fought 7 13 loss, but the game highlighted the leadership and resilience of the senior class. Coach Walden reflected on the matchup, noting, “The overall thought is I maybe should have made an adjustment at halftime and played my original starting varsity to finish the game for the win, but ideally, I wanted the seniors to handle business and do it together. Key takeaways from this game are to be ready on offense, stay active and aggressive on defense, and listen to the coaches, not just do what you want. That’s why the result was a loss.”
Looking ahead, Swainsboro will travel to Washington County this Thursday for their last regular-season matchup before the state playoffs begin. Coach Walden emphasized the importance of finishing strong: “The focus is to win no matter what. We need to limit their offense and stay active and communicative on defense. Offense has to move the ball up the field and score. This will be a tough matchup. We are playing for the #2 or #3 spot. Everyone has to be locked in and ready to handle business.”
Regarding postseason play, Coach Walden expressed excitement for the team’s potential. “I am excited that we should make the playoffs again. This will be our third state playoff appearance since 2022. We’ll either be traveling to Columbus or Gainesville for the first and second rounds. I want the girls who take the game seriously to enjoy this experience, and for the younger players to set it as a goal to go to state every year.”
Senior Day was more than just a pregame ceremony. Fans, teammates, and coaches had the opportunity to celebrate years of dedication, hard work, and leadership. Each senior has left an indelible mark on the Lady Tigers program, from on-field leadership to mentoring younger players, and will be remembered for shaping the team’s culture.
As the Lady Tigers prepare for Thursday’s matchup and the start of the postseason, the focus remains on finishing the regular season strong and carrying the leadership and experience of the senior class into the playoffs.
