In Grandmother’s lap with a good book

The Xi Delta Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, in keeping with what is now a 17-year tradition, made its annual donation to The Franklin Memorial Library on May 29, 2024. The yearly service project honors club members that have become grandmothers during the 2023/2024 Beta Sigma Phi year which spans from August to the following May each year. Not only does this honor the new grandmother but it is also the club’s way of assisting the library by donating for the express purpose of purchasing children's books. This has become one of the most enjoyable service projects of the Xi Delta Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

In the current time we find ourselves in a world consumed in technology. The sisters of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority feel very strongly that the lack of personal touch and communication is still very important and should be practiced more frequently. There is, in most cases, a special bond between a child and a grandparent. How could that better be shown than by the simple act of a child and grandparents sitting together and enjoying the good old-fashioned art of reading a book together? Not only is it a time of togetherness, but it is also fun and, in some cases, educational as well.

In the past years there have been as many as eight or as few as one new grandchild/children born into the sisterhood each year. This year there was only one new addition to our “Beta Sigma Phi” family. Kim Hooks was honored by her first grandchild, Lucille Evans Hooks.

The sorority looks forward to continuing this tradition in the future. The library, its staff and volunteers are a vital part of our small but growing community. Being able to help in any way, especially in a way that involves children, is a privilege that the organization takes both pride and pleasure in.

The members of Beta Sigma Phi cannot fully express their gratitude to the library staff and volunteers for all that they do. They provide so many things for our community that many folks are not even aware of. Everyone should keep an eye on the The Forest-Blade or The Franklin Memorial Library Facebook page for upcoming events for both children and adults. Our community is fortunate to have a library that is up to date, well equipped and still a community-oriented facility for our use. The sisters of Beta Sigma Phi urge you to “check it out” and enjoy what The Franklin Memorial Library has to offer. You’ll be surprised at the vast array of things they offer.
