Annual Honors Night Ceremony held at East Georgia State College

On Thursday, April 18, East Georgia State College (EGSC) hosted their Annual Honors Night Ceremony in the Luck F. Gambrell Building Auditorium. Faculty, staff, students, and their families were invited to attend the celebration and recognize the hard work of EGSC students.

Dr. David Schecter, president of EGSC, welcomed the award winners and their families to campus followed by Dr. Catherine Whelan, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, who began recognizing students.

The first student recognized was Anthony De Leon-Lopez. He was awarded the University System of Georgia Outstanding Scholar Award.

The next set of awards were the Emily Pestana-Mason Memorial Poetry Contest Award winners. Billy Martin received first place, Talia Abdul-Rahim was awarded second place, and Alex McDonald received third place in the competition.

The Outstanding Graduate Awards were presented to students who graduated in Fall of 2023 or who are graduating in May who excelled in their subject area of study. The following students received the awards:

• Associate of Arts in Elementary Education: Adalee Conway

• Associate of Arts in Social Sciences: Jeslyn Olson

• Associate of Arts Liberal Arts - General Track: Salma Cueva Santana & Brandon Laughlin

• Associate of Science in Business Administration: Anthony De Leon-Lopez

• Associate of Science in Natural Sciences: Samantha Moore

• Associate of Arts Liberal Arts – Computer Science Track: Lee Hannah

• Associate of Arts Liberal Arts – Nursing Track: Karmen Thompson

The Subject Area Awards were presented to students for their performance in the subject area. The recipients were selected by faculty members. The following awards were presented:

• Art Award: William Bennett

• Biology Award: Samantha Moore

• Business Administration Award: Anthony De Leon-Lopez

• Chemistry Award: Samantha Moore

• Criminal Justice Award: Shannon Dayton

• Elementary Education Award: Hannah Rickerson

• English Award: Jessiel Dart and Daniella Delgado

• History Award: Aiden Purvis

• Mathematics Award: Garrett Peebles

• Physics Award: D’Mya Griffin

• Political Science Award: Raegan Cupp

• Sociology Award: Alora Jackson

The Leadership and Service in Campus Activities Awards were presented to students who are involved on campus and have a passion for serving others. The following Leadership and Service Awards were presented:

• African American Male Initiative (AAMI) Award: Jalen Gallman

• Baptist Collegiate Ministries Award: Evan Rogers

• The Book Club Award: Brian Priester

• Circle K Club Award: Ashlie Lacue

• Hoopee Bird Award: Levi Carpenter

• STEMM Club Award: Brian Priester

• Student Government Association Award: Kayla Stone

• Unity Club Award: Akcire Robertson

The Student Athletics Awards were presented to students who excelled on the field or court and also in the classroom. The following student athletes received awards for their performance:

• Baseball: Robert Lane

• Men’s Basketball: Jalen Gallman

• Softball: Jayda Treaster

• Women’s Basketball: Aniyah Jones

The following students were inducted in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society: Christina Castro, Shannon Dayton, Anthony De Leon-Lopez, Grace Gordon, Skylar Herman, Phoenix Hill, Samantha Moore, Peyton Rich, and Kayla Stone.

The Annual President’s List and Dean’s List recipients were recognized on stage and given a certificate for their achievement. The following students were presented with Annual President’s List certificates: Ethan Breslin, Salma Cueva Santana, Colton Daniels, Anthony De Leon-Lopez, Tanner Elizondo, Ashton Kehren, Sydney Land, and Brandon Laughlin.
