For the second time in five days, emergency units have responded to the area of I-16 and US 1 in Oak Park. At 3:52 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 911 was notified of a crash on I-16 Westbound at mile marker 89.5. Two tractor-trailer units had collided, and one driver was injured. Additional reports indicated that one truck had struck the bridge over US 1 and there was damage to the bridge.
Units from the Sheriff’s Office, EMS, Swainsboro Fire, State DOT, State Patrol and Motor Carrier Compliance Division were all enroute. The driver was able to escape from his cab and was able to walk with assistance to the stretcher. He was taken to Emanuel Medical Center for treatment.
Due to the debris field and lengthy recovery of the wreck, all westbound traffic was diverted off I-16, across US 1 and back on to westbound. DOT is examining the damage to the bridge and roadway. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
