This summer, Christian Novak, High School Social Studies teacher, had the incredible privilege of serving as a Social Studies instructor for the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP), one of Georgia’s premier educational programs for exceptionally gifted rising high school juniors and seniors.
Each year, students from across the state are selected through a highly competitive application and interview process to spend several weeks living on a college campus and immersing themselves in an intensive academic experience. They had roughly 50 social studies students, representing approximately the top 0.5% of the state’s eligible social studies students.
There were no grades or standardized tests, just an opportunity to learn for the sake of learning. Students take part in rigorous seminars, performances, research, and discussions with peers who share a genuine love of critical thinking and intellectual curiosity.
Novak shared, “It was an honor to work with some of Georgia’s brightest students. I fielded thoughtful questions, moderated lively debates, and challenged ideas in every session. In Social Studies, we explored history, philosophy, political thought, and the enduring questions that shape societies and human behavior. The conversations were insightful, respectful, and often continued long after class ended.”
He went on to say, “Just as rewarding was the opportunity to work alongside an exceptional faculty from across Georgia. Being surrounded by educators who are passionate about their disciplines and dedicated to inspiring young minds was both enriching and energizing. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been part of GHP this summer, and I’m excited to bring fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm back to my own students this fall!”
We are extremely proud that one of ECI’s own was chosen for such an elite opportunity. Mr. Novak consistently uses these same instructional practices and sets the bar high in his own classroom. Congrats on this amazing accomplishment!
