Lewis repeats as State Champion: Swainsboro Golfer captures second straight GHSA title

For the second consecutive year, Swainsboro High School golfer Colten Lewis has etched his name into Georgia high school golf history.

Lewis successfully defended his title at the GHSA Class A Division I State Golf Championships, held May 18-19 at Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course in Elberton, becoming a rare back-to-back state champion and further cementing his legacy as one of the most accomplished golfers ever to represent Swainsboro High School.

The rising senior delivered a dominant performance over two days, firing a 3-under-par 69 in the opening round before following it with a 1-under-par 71 on day two. His two-round total of 140 (-4) was enough to secure the championship by an impressive eight strokes over the field.

While the championship trophy was the reward, Lewis said the moment was about much more than golf.

“When I realized I had successfully defended my state championship, I felt incredibly grateful,” Lewis said. “It was rewarding to see another year of hard work pay off and accomplish a goal I had set at the beginning of the season. In that moment, I thought about all the people who supported me along the way—my family, coaches, teammates, and friends. Winning the championship was special but sharing that experience with the people who helped me get there made it even more meaningful.”

According to Swainsboro head golf coach Heath Palmer, Lewis’ success is no accident.

“What stands out to me is his consistency, not only in his performance on the course, but also his consistency in working hard on his game,” Palmer said. “When time and opportunity are available, he is constantly working on his craft. That is what separates him from most other players he competes with.”

Palmer noted that Lewis faced challenges throughout the season but never allowed setbacks to derail his preparation.

“Colten is a worker,” Palmer said. “He had stretches through the season when he knew he wasn’t playing his best golf. He continued to grind, practice hard, and was able to peak at the right time.”

The accomplishment is unprecedented for the Swainsboro golf program and carries significance beyond the school itself.

“There have been a number of Swainsboro High School golfers who have gone on to play competitively after high school,” Palmer said. “Colten being able to capture elusive back-to-back championships is unprecedented. It means a lot not only for our high school but also for the community of local golfers as well. Swainsboro Country Club does a great job of making golf accessible to young people in our community, and all of them support Colten wholeheartedly.”

As Lewis reflects on his journey, he hopes younger golfers understand that success is built on daily habits and maintaining perspective.

“My biggest piece of advice would be to stay grounded in your relationship with Christ and in your relationships with the people around you,” Lewis said. “With all of life’s distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters while pursuing your goals. Once you set a goal, be willing to work hard and do all the little things necessary to reach the next level.”

Lewis also shared one of the lessons instilled in him by Palmer.

“As Coach Palmer says, ‘You are only going to be as good as you want and strive to be.’ Focus on getting one percent better every day, and over time, those small improvements can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.”

With one season remaining in a Swainsboro uniform, Lewis’ career is far from over. Palmer believes his star golfer has an opportunity to accomplish something even more remarkable next spring.

“As an upcoming senior, I think Colten has a very realistic chance of winning the title again,” Palmer said. “We will be changing classifications and could have a new pool of competitors to contend with. One thing is for certain: he will do his best to make sure he stays on top of his game. He will not be outworked.”

For now, Lewis’ back-to-back state championships stand as a testament to talent, discipline, faith, and relentless work ethic. And as he prepares for his senior season, the Swainsboro standout has already secured his place among the greatest golfers to ever wear a Tiger uniform.
