Wreaths Across America observed on Saturday

Wreaths Across America Day took place on December 16, with more that 2.7 million volunteers nationwide placing wreaths at more than 3700 cemeteries throughout the country. Our nation’s heroes were remembered as each name was said aloud and honored as volunteers placed wreaths on headstones of our fallen.

Each live, balsam veteran’s wreath was a gift of respect and appreciation, sponsored by an individual or organization and placed on a headstone by volunteers as a small gesture of gratitude for the freedoms Americans enjoy. For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used as a symbol of honor and have served as a living tribute renewed annually. This tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active-duty military, and their families.

The 2023 theme for Wreaths Across America was Serve and Succeed. There are many ways to serve our community and country, and just as many definitions of success. Each volunteer is part of a success story which enabled us to pass along a message of thanks to the men and women who served and sacrificed for our freedom. We are proud to be Americans that live in a free society made up of many people, from many walks of life. The freedom we enjoy today has not come without a price. Lying in local cemeteries and cemeteries throughout this nation are men and women who gave their lives so that we can live in freedom and without fear.

The United States of America was founded on the ideals of Freedom, Justice, and Equality. Our Nation stands as a shining beacon of liberty and freedom to the world.

There are many men and women serving today in all branches of the military, here at home and in places far away. These men and women are part of the best-trained, best equipped force in the world. We honor them and their families for the sacrifices they make each day to keep our country safe from terrorism, hatred, and injustice.

On Saturday, citizens came together in a united show of gratitude and respect as each played an important part in the mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those that serve and their families, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.

We are most grateful to our sponsors – Mill Creek Foundation, Veterans at the Library, and Governor David Emanuel – Adam Brinson Chapter NSDAR and to the many contributors, supporters, and volunteers who made this event successful. Appreciation is extended to JROTC for providing the Color Guard and to Wiregrass Chapter SAR, Brier Creek Militia and the Skunk Brigade for providing the Flintlock and Cannon 3-Round Volley Salute.
