In writing this article throughout the past few weeks, it has meant so much hearing feedback from others. Whether it is a phone call, or a quick chat in Walmart, being recognized for my work has made me realize that this has all been very much worth it. It also reminds me of how much small towns and the connections inside of them matter.
In this world, we are increasingly dominated by technology, social media, and fast-paced lifestyles. Because of this, genuine human connection can sometimes feel harder to find. While digital platforms allow us to communicate instantly, they often cannot replace the sense of belonging that comes from knowing and supporting people around us.
In small communities, relationships are built through everyday interactions. Neighbors check on one another, local businesses know their customers by name, and community members gather to celebrate successes and support each other through the good and the bad. This creates trust and support that strengthens and builds a steady foundation in a community.
These relationships are especially valuable for younger generations. In small communities, young people often grow up surrounded by mentors, teachers, coaches and community members who take a genuine interest in their success. Seeing familiar faces throughout the community helps create a sense of security and belonging. It also teaches important values such as responsibility, kindness and service to others. When young people witness neighbors helping neighbors, they learn that being a part of a community means looking out for one another.
I remember growing up in the Forest-Blade office, constantly seeing members of the community who made it a point to speak and remind me that I am a part of this community also. As I have grown these same people will leave a lasting impact on me and still make it a point to speak when we meet again. I have also learned that this is a big part of why they take pride in their careers. It means as much to them as it does to the little ones looking up to them.
All in all, the way you show up for your community matters, and we are all blessed to be part of such a close-knit, well-run county. In a time when meaningful connections can seem increasingly rare, the bonds found in small towns remain one of their greatest strengths.
