We're back and we are GLAD

Posted

After a summer hiatus the GLAD Garden Club resumed its fiscal year at the beautiful Sudie A. Fulford Community Learning Center located at the main entrance of East Georgia State College. On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, members were cheerfully welcomed by new Coordinator at the center, Malanie Freeman. The meeting was moved to September 12 this month out of respect and memory of the events that occurred on "9/11". Hopefully we will never forget the horrible events of that day that forever changed our lives. We are so grateful for coffee to get our collective hearts started.

Just because the club was on hiatus does not mean we haven't been active. On May 6, 2023, in spite of a rainy day, Glad Garden Club members were more than excited to participate in the 76th Annual Pine Tree Festival Parade. Members Mary Shepherd, Thomasene Flanders, Sylvia Durden, Jeanette Hall, Gloria Mason and President JoAnn Trammell donned their flowered hats and new Glad Garden Shirts to be chauffeured in luxury by a Daniels Chevrolet truck driven by Tammy Durden, Sylvia Durden's daughter. On August 26, 2023, members of the Glad Garden Club met at Pine Brook Park now known as the Veterans and First Responders Park to participate in an event put on by the Veterans at the Library to honor the 13 service members that were killed on August 26, 2021, in Kabul, Afghanistan. A banner with each service members name on it was carried to the fence for the "Hanging of the Banner" donated by the Glad Garden Club. Also, a "Christmas" tree has been planted in coordination with Arbor Day to honor veterans and is now lit with red, white and blue "Christmas" lights honoring veterans. The tree is now thriving due to the careful monitoring and watering by Jeanette Hall. Then on August 22, 2023, members attended the Oleander District Board Meeting in Hinesville to fellowship, learn new guidelines, meet new officers and eat. Congratulations to our new Garden Club of Georgia President, Lisa Hall from Savannah and new Oleander District 3 Director Joni Thompson from Sylvania. The Glad Garden Club is also very proud to have our own member, Sylvia Durden, on the Board as Director of Historic Landscape and Preservation Director. An informative and good time was had by all.

Glad Garden Club was proud to have our September program presented by Nancy Lisenby, President of our sister club the Seedling Garden Club. An enlightening program was presented regarding raising herbs and other edibles in raised beds. From personal experience, Nancy was quite informative about raising herbs such as basil, oregano, mint, asparagus, kale, strawberries and other edibles. Members were given leaflets originated by the UGA Extension regarding the "Vegetable Garden Calendar" which contained all you need to know about veggie gardening like taking soil samples, composting and fertilizer requirements for vegetables. County Extension offices and Georgia Websites were referenced. Nancy emphasized that this month and November are excellent times for planting lilies, roses, garlic, shallots and orange trees. Members were entertained to find out that Nancy strategically places honey in her garden because those great fertilizers and cultivators...WORMS love honey. The Glad Garden Club is thrilled to welcome new members Karen C. Van Horn, Sandra Bailes, Sheila Metz and Vicki Hooks.

The Glad Garden Club is growing and doing exciting new things and we would love to invite anybody to join in our fun. We have fun but we also do serious work to help beautify, conserve and educate our community. So, if you like to play in the dirt, and even if you don't, we have all kinds of projects going on and welcome all those interested to come meet with us. We usually meet at the Sudie A. Fulford Center at 10 a.m. on the second Monday of each month, September through May, unless otherwise notified. Y'all come on down, ya hear!

The Glad Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs Inc., the Deep South Region, the Garden Club of Georgia Inc., of the Oleander District.
