Veterans at the Library hold weekly meeting

The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting, Monday, February 13, 2023, at the Franklin Memorial Library at 9:15 a.m. with Chair John Tapley presiding and 42 in attendance. Tapley began the morning discussion about the plans to erect a permanent Christmas Tree at the Patriots and First Responders Park. Tapley has located the tree and and obtained the funds to purchase it. Three new veterans attended the Monday morning breakfast at the library. They were Johnny Edward Wood, Gwilda Yvonne Harris, and Tommy Lee James. Edward served in the U.S. Navy from March 1978 to June 1986. He served on the USS Independence CV-62, NAS Norfolk and the NATTC Milling. He also served during the Falkland War, April 2 - June 14, 1982, and obtained the rank of E-5. Harris served in the GA Air National Guard from December 2, 1978 - March 13, 2007. She was stationed in Savannah, GA at the 165th Air National Guard Unit and obtained the rank of MSGT. James served in the GA Army National Guard from 1974 - 1994. He served as an enlisted soldier in Company A, 878th Combat Engineer Battalion, and after finishing OCS, he served as a platoon Leader in Company C, 878th CEB. Later he was transferred to the 878th CEB Staff and then became the Company Commander of Headquarters, Support Company of the 878th CEB. James deployed to the Country of Oman in 1992 to perform Combat missions for that Country and obtained the rank of Captain. The Veterans at the Library need the citizens of Emanuel County to step up and sponsor one of the 172 cemeteries in Emanuel County for the 2023 WAA on December 16th.
