Librizzi awaits first appearance following 9-mile pursuit

An attempted traffic stop by Baxley police on a suspicious vehicle in connection to a murder incident led to a 9-mile pursuit chase that ended in a cotton field on Hoppy Trail in Appling County earlier last week. Apprehended after the incident was the driver, Twin City native and current Baxley resident Charles Michael Librizzi, age 45, who was found to be in possession of a large amount of methamphetamine. Librizzi was taken into custody and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, fleeing and attempting to elude police officers, along with other traffic offenses. The pursuit that led to the arrest of Librizzi began after his vehicle was spotted at Key West Inn on September 21. However, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Screven County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) had been searching for Librizzi’s whereabouts since the prior night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., Monday, September 20, the GBI was requested to assist SCSO with a death investigation of a Reidsville, North Carolina, woman identified as Kathern Rebecca Scott, age 35. Scott’s unresponsive body was found beaten to death at the Holiday Motel on Statesboro Highway, where she had lived the last three months. Librizzi’s name was given as a person of interest, stating that he was possibly there during the time the incident took place. Librizzi was transported to Screven County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday and was charged with one count of malice murder.

The relationship between Librizzi and Scott is still under investigation. An autopsy on Scott will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler.
