The Swainsboro Tigers bounced back in a major way this past weekend, delivering two strong performances that demonstrated how quickly this group is growing. With the victories, the Tigers now sit at (2-1) on the season.
On Friday, December 5, the Tigers hosted Treutlen and put on a defensive showcase from start to finish, earning an impressive 83 to 34 win. Swainsboro controlled the tempo early, applying pressure across the floor and forcing turnovers that turned into easy baskets. It was the exact response the Tigers needed after dropping their season opener to Portal, and the team looked energized as they took command of the game.
Head Coach Brice Hobbs shared that the Tigers are beginning to develop a true identity. According to Hobbs, the team is starting to find who they are defensively, and if Swainsboro is going to be a good team this season, everything must begin on that end of the court.
The momentum continued Saturday, December 6, when Swainsboro defeated Jenkins High out of Savannah 68 to 54. The matchup was filled with excitement, especially because of the athleticism on display. Frankie Barnes, Shannon Benjamin, and Jobias Smith each delivered high flying dunks that brought the crowd to its feet and energized The Den.
At the time of printing, individual player stats were not available.
Coach Hobbs noted that having players with that kind of explosiveness is valuable, sharing that it is great to have athletes who can make plays like that because it lifts the fans, even though the team does not aim to showboat. Their goal is simply to get out in transition, play their style, and let the game unfold naturally.
This week, Swainsboro will be back at home for two important matchups. On Thursday, December 12, at 7:30 p.m., the Tigers will begin region play against Vidalia. Then on Friday, December 13, at 6:30 p.m., Swainsboro will host Jefferson County in what is now a change of venue game. The Tigers will play Jefferson County at home first, then travel for the rematch on January 17.
Fans attending this weekend’s games will also be able to enjoy the annual Tigers Fish Fry, with fresh fish plates available in the concession stand each night.
Coach Hobbs emphasized that staying focused will be essential as the Tigers continue preparing for a playoff push. Setting the tone early on defense remains a top priority heading into this week’s challenges.
With a (2-1) record and confidence rising, the Tigers are gaining momentum at the perfect time. Fans are encouraged to come out, support the team, and pack out The Den as Swainsboro looks to keep the winning streak alive.
