Are you ready...? For what? Well, football season has already kicked off, politicians are counting the days until November 3rd, you only have 52 days to get your Halloween costume ready, Boo!, and everybody is looking and hoping for some cooler weather, please? That’s a lot coming at you at one time, but Labor Day is over, vacation is done, your cruise ship has docked, and the calendar is filling up fast. So, take a deep breath. Here you go!
The Retail Trade Association and the Guide for Leisure and Entertainment activities both say that the next 8-week period is the busiest time of the year that does not ally or coincide with any official national or religious holiday. There’s just a whole lot going on that we don’t really think about, and when you add in the various hunting seasons that fall into this time period, as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas planning, and a whole list of seasonal fairs, it’s enough to make your head spin backwards. It’s kind of a shame this period of the year doesn’t have its own name. I guess we can just call it “Fallish”. Maybe it’s a time that doesn’t need a name, when everything all runs together. (A.R.T.) Another acronym, right? Anyhow, you can be sure that if there is a dollar involved, it’s just a matter of time before Walmart and Amazon and Target all figure out what to call it. I’m shocked and a little worried that they haven’t already done it.
Well, let’s keep this simple and sane and break it all down. As far as politics, I say if someone wants your vote, let them come ask you for it. You don’t need to get stressed out about that. Avoid TV commercials, texting, and throw out those flyers in the mail. In the race for the U.S. Senate, Mike Collins and Jon Ossoff are spending some serious money, but I haven’t seen either one of them down here in Emanuel County. Mr. Ossoff used to make movies with a film company that was given to him by a friend of his parents. He talks about what he’s gonna do for Georgia but says very little about what he’s gotten done for us in the last four years. Mike Collins has a record of getting things done in Georgia and Washington, and he knows our part of Georgia better than Ossoff and all his “Big Oss” Atlanta supporters do. So, if you want my vote, come see me or at least give me a call. The same holds true for the candidates for Governor. Mr. Rick Jackson seems to have the valuable experience of a very successful career in the business world. That says a lot to me. His opponent Mrs. Bottoms had four years as Mayor of Atlanta and decided that was quite enough. Now she wants to try to lead the whole state? I don’t believe we have seen her down here either. I was about to say come see me or give me a call, but come to think of it, I changed my mind about phone calling. That’s because I have a friend named Henry who is a world champion prank phone-call artist. Therefore, I will not be taking any phone calls from strange numbers until the election is over. Mr. Ossoff, I don’t think you have to worry about Henry. As good as he is, I don’t believe even he could do you justice with what you say or how you say it. Now that takes care of political matters. Just vote for the best local candidate and people you know who will continue to do a good job.
Now, as far as football, that’s easy to take care of. All you need to do is just set aside Friday nights and Saturday afternoons accompanied by a little Frito three-layer casserole and some boiled peanuts and some of the best in the state Emanuel County BBQ and that’s all there is to it. As far as Halloween costumes? Old clothes smeared with a lot of ketchup will always do the trick. That just about wraps it up except for the cooler weather. That’s one of those things that are better left up to higher authority, but I am sure we are in good hands there. So, Good Luck with your calendar and stay Fallish! It’s all gonna work out fine.
