Sometimes, we don’t realize how much one person’s belief in us can change our lives.
There are moments when we doubt ourselves. We question whether we’re making the right decision, whether we’re good enough or whether we’re capable of doing something we’ve always wanted to do.
And then there are those people who simply say, “I believe in you.”
It may seem like a small thing, but those four words can carry a lot of weight.
We all need someone in our corner. Someone who reminds us of what we’re capable of when we temporarily forget. Someone who encourages us to keep going when giving up would be easier.
Sometimes that person is a parent. Sometimes it’s a friend, a teacher, a coach, a coworker or even someone who came into our lives unexpectedly.
They don’t necessarily have all the answers. They may not be able to fix our problems. But they can remind us that we’re not facing them alone.
Think about the people who have encouraged you throughout your life. Maybe someone believed in you before you believed in yourself. Maybe they encouraged you to apply for the job, take the class, chase the dream or simply try one more time.
We often remember the big moments in our lives, but we don’t always remember the small words that helped us get there.
A simple “You can do this” can become the push someone needs.
That’s why it’s important to be that person for someone else, too.
If you believe in someone, tell them.
Don’t assume they already know. Tell your friend you’re proud of them. Tell your child you believe in them. Encourage the coworker who’s taking on something new. Remind someone that a mistake doesn’t define them.
We never know what someone may be going through privately or how badly they may need to hear a few encouraging words.
And perhaps one day, they’ll look back and remember that when they weren’t sure they could do something, you were the person who told them they could.
The people who believe in us matter.
So, let’s be intentional about surrounding ourselves with people who lift us up — and let’s make sure we’re doing the same for others.
Because sometimes, all it takes is one person believing in you to give you the courage to believe in yourself.
