The Historic Karrh Center hosts A world class live jazz performance

Posted

The newly restored Karrh Center in downtown Swainsboro swapped its silver screen for live jazz syncopation as it hosted the Louis Pettinelli Jazz Band on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The highly anticipated live music event marked another milestone for the historic 1934 venue, which recently completed extensive renovations to serve as Emanuel County's premier multi-use cultural center. Audiences enjoyed a transformative evening of world-class jazz, swing, and timeless standards in an intimate, state-of-the-art acoustic environment.

The rhythm of downtown Swainsboro got a lot smoother on Saturday night, as the historic Karrh Center was witness to an amazing live performance by the acclaimed Louis Pettinelli Jazz Band.

Doors opened at 6:30 p.m., and with the first downbeat, the sextet carried the musical stylings of jazz from a host of eras. Local jazz enthusiasts and community members were transported through a host of classics and standards and enjoyed a few surprises along the way.

Led by seasoned music professional and entrepreneur Louis Pettinelli, the ensemble brought a wealth of high-caliber performance experience rooted in the nation's most prestigious music scenes, including New York City, Baltimore, Los Angeles and Atlanta. Known for their tight chemistry, vibrant improvisation, and highly accessible jazz styling, Pettinelli’s groups have earned stellar reviews for their musicianship and engaging stage presence from all in attendance.

Attendees enjoyed a diverse setlist that highlighted the best of American jazz heritage, ranging from energetic swing numbers to smooth, soulful ballads. The performance delivered an elegant yet energetic atmosphere perfect for local music lovers to enjoy and experience elite musicianship here in Swainsboro.

For many lifelong Swainsboro residents, stepping into the venue evokes powerful nostalgia. First opened in late 1934 as a vaudeville and feature-film theater, the original Karrh Center Theatre was a local marvel where generations of residents caught weekend picture shows for a dime. After closing its doors in the late 1960’s and being used as part of the Dolores and Woody’s Shops in the 70’s and 80’s, the space sat quiet for a number of years.

Thanks to a comprehensive restoration spearheaded by the Emanuel Coalition for Cultural & Economic Development, the venue has been beautifully revived. Today's Karrh Center seamlessly blends its classic, historic charm with state-of-the-art modern sound and cinema equipment. While it operates as a modern movie theater most weekends, the building was purposefully engineered with the staging, lighting, and acoustics necessary to anchor major live concerts, theatrical plays, and cultural recitals. This was the 4th live event of the Show Case Season.

Yet to come are Katie Deal - a Patsy Cline tribute artist in October, and the globally renowned Georgia Southern Orchestra's Christmas Concert on December 7 - a day that will live in infamy to paraphrase FDR!

The addition of high-profile music events like Jazz Night reflects a growing movement to revitalize downtown Swainsboro into a bustling hub for regional arts and commerce and community fellowship.

Please be reminded there are still two more events in this season’s live event offerings, and tickets can still be purchased. Contact (478) 419-1308 or stop by the Karrh Center, 107 North Green Street in Swainsboro for more information.
