Swainsboro steams past Washington County, improves to 2-0

After a great showing last week, Swainsboro was back home to face a familiar foe. The Tigers welcomed Washington County into “The Den” with hopes to send them home with a loss. The Tigers opened up the scoring with a 59-yard touchdown run by Demello Jones taking the lead 6-0. The defense was dominant, and it wouldn’t take the offense much longer to extend their lead to 13-0 on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Schuyler Coney. It was evident midway through the second quarter that with the Tigers’ speed, they may run away with this one. Jones made it a 20-0 lead on another touchdown run, this one a 35-yarder. The Tigers quickly scored again to make it 27-0 and this one was all but over. The Tigers rolled to a 46-6 win over WACO behind a great game on both sides of the ball. The defense often gets overshadowed by this great offense, but they were terrific in this one. They’ve been a dominant group for the last few seasons, but this group has had some players step up and fill in big holes from last season. The offense did their usual thing - they scored a lot of points. They ran for 344 yards as a group with five touchdowns; Jones had two, Bryson Tarver, Jordan Williams, and Jabios Smith all had one. The passing game was better in this one as Jones threw for two touchdowns and 78 yards all to Schuyler Coney. Head Coach Scott Roberts was satisfied saying, "We started out a little sluggish, but our kids fought through it. This is a game of adversity and all that matters is how you respond to it. We are growing up every week, but we have a long way to go."

The Tigers will head to Hazlehurst next week to take on Jeff Davis at 7:30 p.m.
