The Swainsboro Lady Tigers officially wrapped up spring practice and tryouts this past week as the program continues preparing for the upcoming fall season with growing energy, leadership and confidence throughout the roster.
According to Head Coach Alexandria Walden, the Lady Tigers showed encouraging growth during the five-day spring session. The coaching staff was pleased with both the turnout and competitiveness displayed by the players.
“Overall, these last five days of spring tryouts was good,” Walden said. “The numbers were good. We had about 23 girls with about nine being returners. These girls are coming with some energy that is needed and wanted. They have the will to win and be competitive. They want to be pushed and learn more quickly.”
Although many players are still learning the game, Walden believes the team made important progress throughout spring workouts and practices. The coaching staff focused on fundamentals, communication, conditioning and team chemistry as the girls continued learning the pace and structure of flag football.
The Lady Tigers also traveled to Portal on Friday, May 8, to take on the Portal Lady Panthers in their spring game matchup. The game quickly became a test of resilience and mental toughness for Swainsboro.
Just before kickoff, the Lady Tigers lost their returning starting center to illness. The team was forced to move forward with a player who had never played the position before. Despite the unexpected challenge, the Lady Tigers continued to compete and battle throughout the night.
“The spring game was definitely a learning experience and a big challenge for those who are new to the game,” Walden said.
Swainsboro fell behind 14-0 in the first half after early adversity shifted the team’s focus away from execution and chemistry. However, the Lady Tigers responded with determination in the second half. Swainsboro scored two touchdowns to cut the deficit to 14-13 and put themselves in position to tie the game late. A tipped pass was eventually intercepted and returned for a score by Portal, sealing the final margin while Swainsboro was driving down the field.
Despite the outcome, Walden was proud of the way the girls regrouped emotionally and mentally throughout the game.
“I reminded them of the purpose of the spring game,” Walden said. “Calls will not always go our way. The goal was to keep battling, stay focused and fight until the very end.”
Swainsboro’s JV squad also delivered an impressive performance by defeating Portal’s JV team 13-6 in a hard-fought game. The effort and enthusiasm shown by the younger players stood out to the coaching staff and gave the program even more optimism moving forward.
“The girls played with great effort, energy and confidence,” Walden said. “Most importantly, they truly enjoyed being out there competing together.”
One of the biggest takeaways from the spring was the leadership displayed by the returning players. According to Walden, the veterans helped lead stretches, communicated throughout practices and held teammates accountable while setting the standard for the program.
“The returners were ready for the mission,” Walden said. “Effort over everything.”
Walden also recalled a moment when one of the team’s returning Defensive Player of the Year leaders challenged the group during workouts by saying, “It starts right now with us. If we’re out here, we must put in the work to do it right. Let’s go, y’all!”
As the Lady Tigers now transition into summer workouts and offseason preparation, the coaching staff plans to continue emphasizing player development, repetition and increasing football IQ across every position group. Areas of focus moving forward include quarterback accuracy and footwork, defensive coverage and awareness and helping each player fully understand their role within the system.
“The goal is for every player to grow in confidence, skill and game IQ,” Walden said. “With commitment and consistent effort, the team will become more cohesive, competitive and ready to push each other to exceed expectations.”
With experienced returners, energetic newcomers and growing chemistry throughout the roster, the Lady Tigers appear poised to continue building momentum heading into the fall flag football season.
