The Emanuel County School System was well represented at the Georgia Capitol by 8th-grade students Bryce Chapman, Landon Beal, Emma Sconyers, Zaylin Lee, Maci Sumner, and Dei'Vion Davis from Swainsboro Middle School. They had the privilege of serving as pages through the Georgia Senate Page Program on February 27, 2023.

As a Senate Page, the students served the Georgia Senators by delivering important information and messages to them in the Senate chamber during the legislative session day. The program provides students a first-hand opportunity to observe and participate in your state government. It is a unique opportunity to participate in the Senate’s daily activities.

Students said they enjoyed the day tremendously and learned so much. They said it was great to get to talk to the Georgia Senators, take messages back and forth, and learn the proper etiquette on how to address Senators. One explained, “You should stand up, look them in the eye, shake their hands, and address them as Senator.” The students were taught how to track bills and received a certificate and Georgia Information Packet before they left.

Although the Senators are debating serious topics, the students said they found it interesting that one debate was whether to ban leaf blowers in Atlanta. The students admitted they found that entertaining, although they knew it was a serious issue. Out of these students that participated in this special day, two can see themselves as future politicians.
