Mary Ellen Smith traveled to visit her mother's best high school friend, Lyn Smith Kustal and her daughters, Amy and Dana, in August, to Ojai, CA, just outside of LA. While on her trip, she visited the Hollywood sign on August 20, and took this photo with The Forest-Blade. While in Ojai, Mary Ellen experienced her first earthquake, 5.5 with 10 aftershocks, and also the first hurricane to hit LA since 1939. When she arrived home on August 21, she made it home just in time for our hurricane that hit Swainsboro. That's two hurricanes and 1 earthquake in two weeks, but she had another first; she flew on her first big jet to and from LA for the first time at 51 years old. Congratulations Mary Ellen.
