Talmadge “Tee” Smith Jr., son of Bonnie Rose Smith and the late Talmadge Smith Sr., is the Choral Director and the Literary Team coach at Houston County High School. This year makes Smith’s second year at HCHS. Last year, they won the 2023 6A Literary State Championship for the first time in school history and this year, they are back-to-back state champions, winning the 2024 state title. Students compete in Region and State events in March of each year and the events that place first, move to state in their individual events. The team with the highest points at the end of the day wins the state title. Literary events include Boys and Girls Vocal Solo, Vocal Trio, Vocal Quartet, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation and Duo Interpretation, Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking and International Extemporaneous Speaking, Literary Analysis Essay and Personal Essay.

The Literary team is a GHSA-sponsored fine-arts “sport".

Tripp Smith, son of Tee and Stephanie Smith, was in the quartet that won first place at State. Smith is a freshman at Houston County High School.
