The Seedling Garden Club held its monthly meeting October 13 at the First Methodist Social Hall. President Kay Peacock called the meeting to order and welcomed two new members, Jaycee Faircloth Spivey and Gina Karrh. “We are always glad to welcome new members.”
Chaplain Paula Karrh gave an inspiring inspiration titled, "Thank God to be an American Woman, free to plant and watch gardens grow." We, as garden club members, are very blessed to be able to help God's creation stay beautiful. Secretary Cheryl Goodman read the previous minutes from last meeting. Filling in for treasurer Wanda Ellis, Nancy Lisenby gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved as presented. Yonna Bailey, Yard of the Month Chairman, reported that Marsha Riner was given October Yard of the Month.
Under old business: The SAR Liberty Tree Project was reported on. The club voted to plant this tree last year and has been waiting on a good location. After checking, it was decided the tree will be planted in First Responders Park after some repair work gets finished. President Peacock reported that the club's annual auction in November will be held on November 10 at the Swainsboro Methodist Church Social Hall.
Under new business: Club voted to become a GCG Century Club Member. Garden Club of Georgia will be celebrating a century of Beautification, Conservation and Education in 2028. In order to help with the cost of some of the events planned for the celebration, GCG established the Century Club. Members or clubs can belong to this club by donating $100.00. The club thinks this is a good way to help celebrate. Seedling Garden Club is 50 years old.
President Peacock reported on the 67th Oleander District Annual Meeting held in Brunswick on October 9. The club donated a raffle basket as requested. Theme of our basket was "Tea Time". Members furnished items to be placed in basket. We also carried our tabs for the McDonald House. These are collected over the year and is always in competition with other district clubs to see who brings the most pounds. Honored guest for the meeting was Diane Hunter, president of GCG. Former Oleander District Directors were seated at reserved table and recognized. Kay Peacock was honored to be part of this group. She served as Oleander District Director from 1999-2001. The program was presented by Charles McMillan on "Importance of Land Conservation in Coastal Georgia." Stressing the importance of protecting the Okefenokee Swamp. Members were asked to sign a petition asking Gov. Kemp to protect the Swamp. The district Chaplain, Mary Virginia Keith presented a beautiful memorial service for members that has passed this past year. The club was sad to see our club member, Mary Ellen Smith's picture on screen. Our own DD, Martha Cobb did a great job presiding over this meeting. Three members of Seedling Garden Club attended, Wanda Ellis, Nancy Lisenby and Kay Peacock. It was reported that 157 was in attendance. Seedling Garden Club was happy to receive The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Standard of Excellence in recognition of their many accomplishments for 2024.
The program for the evening was presented by Melina Brown, owner of Infused & Rooted, and Sadie Boulineau. She explained how she uses herbs to make seasonings and cooking oils. Melina started out by making these as gifts then started her own business. She shared some of the oils for members to taste and had a display of her packages of different herb seasonings and explained how the different ones can be used for seasoning foods. It was a very interesting program, and everyone enjoyed the tasting time.
The meeting closed with horticulture tips from Paula Karrh. She told of what, when and where to start pruning and planting. We are always thankful for her tips. Peacock thanked hostesses for meeting, Dot Kirby, Joy Steele and Yonna Bailey. Using a Fall/Halloween theme, the table was graced with a large potted mum adorned with a metal black cat face. Fifteen members were present and two new members were welcomed, making a total of 17 present. Members enjoyed homemade pound cake, cookies, nuts and soda.
Dawn Phillips won the raffle item, and Paula Karrh won the bottle of oil donated by our guest speaker. Meeting was adjourned.
