Runoffs galore in recent elections

Results of the May 19 election provide a limited picture of the political landscape in Emanuel County, but also a confusing one. Local races, however, would be the exception to that description. In the race for County Commissioner District 2, incumbent Ricky Thompson was victorious with 449 votes to 180 votes for Alan Moss. In District 4 Board of Education, Tanya Lane garnered 559 votes over Phyllis Dixon with 166. In the District 5 post of the Board of Education, voters gave a close win to Elizabeth DeVane with 269 over Shonray Brooks with 242 votes.

In Statewide elections, Mike Collins received 369,359 votes and Derek Dooley received the next highest total with 275,312 in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate election. Jon Osoff received 1,040,355 as the Democrat primary candidate. For Governor, the highest Republican Primary candidate total went to Burt Jones with 357,850, with Rick Jackson receiving 303,402 votes. The Democrat candidate for the office, Keisha Lalne Bottoms, received 56.22% of the vote with 606,983 which would qualify her as the Democrat primary winner. In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Republican primary, Greg Dolezal received 205,303 and John Kennedy scored 272,479. In the Democrat primary, Josh McLaurin was the high vote candidate with 41.41% of the vote to Nabilah Parkes 39.50% of the vote. The Secretary of State Republican primary top performer was Tim Fleming with 39.22% to Vernon Jones with 27.29%. On the Democrat side, Dana Barrett captured 35.22% with Penny Reynolds at 42.34% of vote. For State Attorney General, Brian Strickland won the Republican primary vote with 71.60% and Tanya Miller will be the Democrat primary winner with 84.55%. The Commissioner of Insurance Republican candidate will be John King, and the Democrat primary candidates are DeAndre Mathis with 19.80% and Keisha Waites with 42.03%. For State School Superintendent, the Republican candidates receiving the highest totals were Fred Longgear with 29.10% and Richard Woods with 49.89%. Democrat candidate Lydia Powell received 50.48% and will be the declared winning candidate in that primary. In the Commissioner of Labor race, Barbara Holmes was declared the Republican primary winner and Democrat Nikki Porcher received 30.78% to 25.86% for Michelle Sanchez.

In races for Public Service Commissioner district 3, Fitz Johnson was the Republican primary winner with 50.19% of the vote and Peter Hubbard was the democrat winner with 100% of the vote. For PSC District 5, Bobbby Mehan gathered 31.06% of Republican primary voters to 47.16% for Josh Tolbert. In the Democrat primary for the race, Sheila Edwards won with 55.69%. For the U.S. House of Representatives, Rick Allen was the Republican primary winner with 82.36% and the Democrat Primary will be a runoff with candidates Traci George at 26.67% and Ceretta Smith at 32.76%.

In races for Supreme Court Justice, Charles Bethel defeated Miracle Rankin and Jen Jordan lost to Sarah Warren. In Judge, Court of Appeals Trenton Brown defeated Will Wooten and Fatima Felton lost to Elizabeth Gobiel.
