In April of this year, 32 boats carrying 65 men who call themselves the River Rats, set off on Friday, April 17 to make their annual tour of the Ogeechee River. The trip ended on Sunday, April 19 at Kings Ferry in Chatham County.
Funds for the event were raised through t-shirt sales, shotgun raffle tickets, participant donations, and sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. As in previous years, community support was exceptional.
This year, the River Rats raised an impressive $52,000, which was presented to the Greenville Shriners Hospital on May 28.
“The River Rats fundraising event is the most unique event that supports our hospital. Our relationship with them has always been a perfect match,” said Paul Finelli, Senior Director of Philanthropy at the hospital. “We provide care to children regardless of their financial circumstances, and this diverse group of men helps make this possible.”
In addition to their financial contribution, the River Rats donated a commemorative paddle to the hospital. According to Finelli, the paddle will be displayed on a wall at the hospital and will serve as a conversation piece for visitors, potentially inspiring others to do something similar.
The River Rats extend their sincere gratitude to all sponsors and supporters who contributed to this year’s success. They look forward to continued community involvement in future events. Anyone interested in joining next year’s river tour is encouraged to contact a River Rat member. Likewise, those approached for sponsorship are reminded that every dollar raised supports a truly worthwhile cause.
