Main Street Market’s Music Memories Museum received a special treat last week with a visit from renowned designer Manuel “Manny” Cuevas Jr., son of legendary tailor Manuel Cuevas. The Cuevas Family, now based in Nashville, Tennessee, is known worldwide for shaping the visual identity of some of the greatest names in music.
For decades, generations of performers have turned to Manuel Cuevas to create the looks that defined their on-stage personas. His work helped mold the image of icons, most famously Elvis Presley, whose unforgettable gold lamé suit was crafted by Cuevas in collaboration with Hollywood tailor Nudie Cohn—whose daughter, Barbara, Cuevas later married.
The designer also famously sent Johnny Cash nine black suits for a tour. When Cash questioned why they were all the same color, Cuevas joked that black fabric has been on special. Cash eventually embraced the look, realizing the color matched the somber, introspective themes of his music. Those suits played a key role in shaping Cash’s enduring identity as “The Man in Black.”
During the visit, Manny Cuevas Jr. shared stories of working alongside his father and continuing his family’s rich artistic tradition. Museum staff and guests were thrilled to welcome him and honor the legacy of a family whose designs have helped define American music history.
