Winning every game in a season is never easy, especially at the middle school level. For the Swainsboro Middle School girls’ basketball team, an undefeated season has been built on discipline, effort, and playing together.
That perfect regular season will now be put to the test as postseason play begins. The SMS girls will take the court Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Swainsboro Middle School, hosting East Laurens in the semifinal round of the playoffs.
A win on Tuesday would send the Lady Tigers to the championship game on Thursday, which would be played at The Den at Swainsboro High School, against the winner of West Laurens and Dodge County.
Head coach Ikera Devouil credits the team’s success to consistency. She said her players show up every day ready to work, compete, and hold each other accountable. Defensively, the group takes pride in getting stops, while offensively they focus on sharing the basketball and playing unselfishly.
That approach has guided the team throughout the season. Early on, players were learning their roles and building chemistry. As the season progressed, the group grew more confident and connected on the court.
Devouil said communication has improved, decision-making has sharpened, and the players have learned how to respond when things do not go their way during games.
For Devouil, success at the middle school level goes beyond wins and losses. She believes basketball should teach discipline, teamwork, and respect, lessons that extend far beyond the court.
As the Lady Tigers prepare for Tuesday’s playoff matchup, the focus in practice has remained simple. Fundamentals, defensive intensity, and execution have been the priorities.
Devouil said the team is emphasizing energy, taking care of the basketball, communicating on defense, and staying locked into the game plan.
With an undefeated season behind them and postseason basketball now underway, the SMS girls’ basketball team remains focused on staying disciplined, playing together, and taking the journey one game at a time.
With both the Swainsboro Middle School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams completing undefeated regular seasons, the results point to positive development at the middle school level. The focus remains on preparing student-athletes for future competition while continuing to build strong habits within the program.
