Nothing better than reading with grandmother

Posted

The Xi Delta Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, in keeping with tradition, made its annual donation to Franklin Memorial Library earlier this month. This will be the sixteenth year of this tradition. The yearly service project honors club members that have become Grandparents during the Beta Sigma Phi year which spans from August until the following May. Not only does this honor the new grandmother but it is also the club's way of helping the library by making a donation for the express purpose of purchasing children's books. This has become one of the most enjoyable service projects of Beta Sigma Phi. With technology taking the place of so many things in our lives in current times the sisters of the sorority feel that it is still very special to the grandparent and her grandchild/children to enjoy reading together. Not only is it a great pastime, fun, and sometimes educational, but it also helps maintain a special closeness and a sense of family, comfort, contentment and normalcy.

In past years there have been as many as eight grandchildren or as few as one born into the sisterhood in a given year. This year there were three new additions to our Beta Sigma Phi group of grandmothers. Below are the names of the grandmothers followed by the names of her most recently born grandchildren.

Fay Flanders: Jency Ray Flanders

Ann Johnson: Barrett Brooks Johnson

Teresa Smith: Corbin Louis Tolomeo

Beta Sigma Phi looks forward to carrying on this tradition for many years to come. The library, its staff and volunteers are truly a vital part of our community. Being able to help in any way, especially a way that involves children, is a privilege that the organization takes both pride and pleasure in.

The members of Beta Sigma Phi cannot fully express their gratitude to the library staff and volunteers for all that they do. They provide so many things for our community that some may not be aware of. Everyone should keep an eye on the Blade for upcoming events at the library, many are especially for children. Our small but growing town is very fortunate to have such an up to date and well-equipped and community-oriented facility for our use.
