The Twin City Lions Club recently held their monthly lunch meeting at Simply Southern Restaurant in Twin City. Lion George Elder invited Peyton Mercer of Mercer Timberland Management Services to be the guest speaker.
Mr. Mercer recently graduated from the University of Georgia and majored in Forestry. He informed the members present of the impact International Paper shutting down has had on the local timber industry. He also talked about various aspects of land management in terms of recommending which types of pines to plant with consideration being given to the type of soil and whether the producer will capitalize on the straw produced from their pines. Mr. Mercer also explained the science behind how many trees to plant per acre, spraying and managing the timber throughout its life cycle plus the time frame to harvest the timber.
The club enjoyed learning more about the timber industry in our area and appreciates Mr. Mercer and his family joining them.
