Emanuel gets first deputy lawlady
For the first time in the history of Emanuel County, a woman was sworn in as a deputy sheriff. Mrs. Zeta S. Youmans was named to the post by Sheriff J.L. Lewis Jr. and sworn in by Ordinary Freddie Keen on Jan. 26. Mrs. Youmans began work in the office of the Emanuel County sheriff in 1956 as clerk to former Sheriff Peyton Youmans.

Kiwanis votes for natural gas for city
The Swainsboro Kiwanis Club met Tuesday evening, Mar. 7, at the Tick Tock for the regular weekly dinner and program. One of the main items of business was the discussion of natural gas for Swainsboro. The club voted unanimously to recommend that it be brought to the city, and a resolution was drawn asking the mayor and Council to take steps immediately to secure the improvement. James H. Morgan was in charge of the program.
