The 5th Annual Memorial Day Service will be held Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at the Veterans & 1st Responders Memorial Park. Before the service, a breakfas, sponsored by the Emanuel Medical Center will be held for VETERANS ONLY at the hospital cafeteria at 8 a.m. Over 70 veterans and Brier Creek Artillery members will attend this annual breakfast. The Memorial Day, A Day of Remembrance, will start off with a welcome from Chair Johnny Tapley, then the invocation by Compatriot Bernard Martin. The Pledge to the Flag of the United States will be led by Veteran Scotty Newsworthy. A bell will be tolled by veteran Jim McCurdy for each of Emanuel County's 31 heroes from the Revolutionary War buried in Emanuel County, then tolled for the War Between the States, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and Global War on Terror (Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa). The bell will be tolled for each of the 40 service members that we fly the U.S. Flags on the fence. Also, the bell will be tolled for the 12 Emanuel County Firemen and Law Enforcement killed: Swainsboro Fire Department, Swainsboro Police Department, Twin City Police Department, Emanuel County Sheriff's Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Brier Creek Artillery (Wiregrass, Brier Creek, Little River Chapters) will fire a three-round volley (18 rounds) with their six cannons (five six-pounders and one eight-pounder). After the three-round volley, Veteran Scotty Newsworthy will play taps on his bugle. The Memorial service will end with closing remarks from Chair Johnny Tapley and the benediction by Compatriot Bernard Martin. The event is sponsored by the Veterans at the Library, DAR, VFW, The American Legion, The Sons of the American Legion and the Sons of the American Revolution.
