Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Mary V. Newton Canady, age
86, of Emanuel County, on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Emanuel County Nursing Home, under the care of Pruitt Health Hospice. Private graveside services were conducted at Eastbrook Cemetery and Mausoleum on Monday, January 4, with Rev. Franklin Sasser officiating. CDC social distancing guidelines were observed and masks were encouraged for the safety and health and well-being of others.
The daughter of the late Charles and Cora Webb Newton, Mary was a lifelong resident of Twin City. She was a member of the Pilot Club, and a long-time member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Mary worked at Spivey Bank as a teller for nearly ten years. She adored her Join Hands Sunday School Class. Mary was an avid reader of historical romances and she enjoyed collecting Depression glass. Mary held dear, her many wonderful memories of friends and her years spent in Twin City School. She always talked about all the friends going dancing in groups and attending ballgames. Mary often tried to keep up with current news of her classmates. Until the last few years, Mary continued to listen to E.C.I. football with much excitement and pride. During her stay at the nursing home Mary became and enjoyed being a birdwatcher and a Georgia Bulldog fan. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 62 years, James E. Canady; sister, Sarah Ellen Newton Gillis; and brother, Charlie James Newton.
Survivors include daughter, Kathy Claxton (Keith) of Swainsboro; son, Chuck Canady of Swainsboro; five grandchildren, Kristal Smith (Wayne), Derrick Canady (Jennifer), Mathew Claxton,
Joshua Claxton, and Jamie Phillips (Chris); five great-grandchildren, all of whom she was very proud; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family,
