Hospitals have long been places of healing and hope. For Bobby and Vera Brightwell, Emanuel Medical Center became something even more. It became the place where they found love when they least expected it.
Vera Brightwell had already spent many years volunteering at Emanuel Medical Center when she first noticed a new face making his way through the halls. She began volunteering at EMC around 1985 and became a familiar and comforting presence to patients and staff alike. After losing her husband of 40 years, Vera continued to give of her time in serving at the hospital. She never imagined that volunteering would lead to her finding love again. But one day, it did.
“I saw that baldheaded man,” Vera recalls with a laugh, “and I thought, ‘now he’s the one.’” In that moment, she says, she simply knew.
Bobby Brightwell may have been a new volunteer to EMC, but he was no stranger to serving others. He had previously volunteered as a groundskeeper at the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Palmetto, Georgia. Like Vera, Bobby had also experienced deep loss, having lost his wife after 50 years of marriage.
What began as a chance encounter soon became something much more. Just five months after first seeing each other across the hospital, Bobby and Vera were married. Eight years later, their love is still as strong and just as visible.
Though they volunteer in different areas of the hospital, their connection is unmistakable. You might spot them holding hands as they walk down the hallway or sharing a sweet smile. Bobby spends his time transporting patients around the hospital, often engaging them in conversation as he helps guide them to their loved ones after surgery or a procedure. Vera serves as a patient relations representative, offering reassurance, answering questions, and providing comfort to patients and families when they need it most.
Together, their shared commitment to service has only strengthened their bond. “It is an absolute blessing,” Vera says, “working as a volunteer with my husband.”
Though their lives began in different places, both journeys eventually led them to Emanuel County. Vera moved to the area after early retirement from the textile industry in North Carolina, while Bobby was drawn to the quiet charm of small-town living. Here, they found not only a place to call home, but also a sense of community and, ultimately, each other.
The Brightwells are part of a long and proud tradition of hospital volunteers whose quiet acts of service leave a lasting impact. At Emanuel Medical Center, volunteers play an essential role each day, helping patients and visitors find their way, assisting with patient transport throughout the facility, and operating the Sunshine Corner Gift Shop. The EMC Volunteer Auxiliary reflects a deep commitment to service, continuing a legacy of volunteerism that has supported hospitals and communities for generations.
Their story is a powerful reminder that volunteering gives far more than it takes. It creates connection, fosters purpose, and sometimes even sparks love.
Emanuel Medical Center invites others to become part of this meaningful tradition. Whether you are looking to give back, meet new people, or simply make a difference, volunteer opportunities are available at the hospital and Emanuel County Nursing Home.
