For the first time in decades, downtown Swainsboro watched history unfold one piece at a time. After years of planning, fundraising, restoration, and unwavering community support, the long-awaited installation of the historic-style marquee at the Barbara & Tobe Karrh Community Arts Center officially began this week, signaling the completion of one of the most anticipated features of the former Dixie Theatre's remarkable transformation.

Crews arrived early Monday morning, quickly drawing crowds of curious residents, downtown business owners, and visitors eager to witness a moment many thought would never come. As the massive marquee structure was carefully lifted into place, cameras appeared, conversations stopped, and memories of the original Dixie Theatre came flooding back for many who had once walked beneath its lights.

For generations, the Dixie Theatre stood as the centerpiece of entertainment in Emanuel County. When it first opened in 1934, its illuminated marquee welcomed moviegoers from across the region, becoming one of downtown Swainsboro's most recognizable landmarks. Although the theatre eventually closed and later served as retail space, many residents never forgot what it represented.

That legacy took on new life when the building was donated to the City of Swainsboro in 2014. What followed was more than a renovation—it was the rebirth of a community icon.

Through years of careful planning, historic preservation, grant funding, private donations, and countless hours of work, the once-vacant theatre was transformed into the Barbara & Tobe Karrh Community Arts Center, a state-of-the-art venue dedicated to enriching the community through arts, culture, education, and entertainment.

The restoration and revitalization of the Karrh Center were made possible through the generous support of numerous partners, including significant grant funding from the Fox Theatre Institute and the Georgia Council for the Arts, along with the generosity of donors and community supporters who believed in preserving this historic landmark. Their investment helped bring the vision of restoring the theatre and returning a historic marquee to downtown Swainsboro to life.

Since opening in 2025, the Karrh Center has welcomed thousands of visitors through its doors for first-run movies, live concerts, theatrical performances, educational programs, art exhibits, and community events. The facility has quickly become one of Emanuel County's premier cultural destinations while serving as a catalyst for continued downtown revitalization.

Yet throughout the restoration, one question was asked time and again:

"When is the marquee going up?"

This week, that question finally received its answer.

The new marquee was carefully designed to honor the historic character of the original Dixie Theatre while complementing the beautifully restored façade of the Karrh Center. Once completed and illuminated, it became a defining feature of downtown Swainsboro once again, welcoming residents and visitors just as it did more than 90 years ago.

More than simply a sign, the marquee stood as a powerful symbol of what could be accomplished when a community believed in preserving its history while investing in its future.

The installation of the marquee represented years of determination by city leaders, volunteers, grant partners, donors, preservation advocates, and citizens who refused to let one of Swainsboro's most treasured landmarks disappear.

"This marquee has been part of the vision since the very beginning," said Karrh Center staff. "Watching it finally become a reality is incredibly rewarding. It represents so much more than a finishing touch—it symbolizes the restoration of a landmark that has meant so much to generations of our community. Seeing the marquee rise above downtown is a reminder of how far this project has come and what can be accomplished when a community works together to preserve its history while building for the future."

City officials also expressed appreciation to the many organizations and individuals whose financial support and dedication helped make the project possible, noting that the restoration could not have been achieved without years of collaborative effort and investment.

By Wednesday afternoon, crews are expected to have completed the installation, giving residents a chance to witness a once-in-a-generation milestone firsthand.

For many, it was an opportunity to watch history being made. For others, it was a chance to relive cherished memories while looking ahead to a bright future.

As the new marquee prepared to illuminate downtown once again, it stood as more than a beacon for movies and performances—it became a symbol of Swainsboro's resilience, pride, and continued commitment to preserving its historic heart for generations to come.
