Let’s hear it from Mary Sue DeLoach Smith

She starts by indicating her 50-year career in teaching began in Emanuel County. Her

first teaching position was to teach Home Economics.

“It was a glorious year! I met so many wonderful people (students and their parents) and I enjoyed learning a good bit about the community,” she added.

She admits she was so eager to teach that she finished Georgia Southern in three years and was age 21 when she began her first teaching year in the Fall of 1972; her being only three years older than some of her Seniors. Adding that she sewed on buttons, made soup, cooked simple meals, made pillowcases, made pear preserves, crocheted, and entered projects in the Emanuel County fair while making home visits to many of her students’ homes. Upon arrival in Bulloch County schools, she taught full time for 30 years as a teacher with a home room class, a teacher of gifted children.

“I earned four degrees in education from GSU, finally graduating in 1999 with a doctorate in Curriculum and Supervision,” she added.

After retiring in 2002, Mary Lou said, “I am blessed to continue working as Project Director for educational grants and to continue in part-time teaching positions.”
