Lane speaks to the Veterans

The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Calvery Methodist Church Social Hall Monday morning, September 29, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 50 in attendance. The Calvery Methodist provided a great breakfast of sausage gravy, biscuits, grits, fresh cut-up fruit, muffins with jelly, cheese with all the trimmings, orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice and coffee. Veteran Dess Smith III introduced Rusty Lane who is the President/CEO of South Auctions. Rusty spoke about real estate and what the value is in Emanuel County in past times and the present.

The newest veteran, Sandy A. Wilhelm, served in the U.S. Army from June 1984 until June 1994. She served in the 547th Medical Battalion and was stationed in Fort Sam Houston, TX, Fort Stewart, and HAAF, Savannah. Her highest rank was E-4. John David Bailey introduced Elizebeth Gilmer who spoke about the Summertown Food Bank and then John David presented her with a $500.00 check from the Veterans. Keith Choates introduced Melissa Hancock who spoke about the Lazarus Food Bank and then Keith presented her with a $500.00 check from the Veterans.

Chair Johnny then spoke about the upcoming "Wreaths Across America" project and that they still have 60 cemeteries to see if any veterans are buried there out of 180 cemeteries in Emanuel County. WAA day is December 13, 2025. Terry Reynolds spoke about the "Wounded Warriors 14th Annual Sportsman's Banquet and Auction" that will be held on October 16, at 5:30 p.m. at Beaver Creek Plantation, 3698 Hwy 80 East, Twin City.
