Lady Dawgs finish another memorable season

It was not the ending they had hoped for, but it was another outstanding season for the ECI Lady Dawg softball team, one filled with memories that players, coaches, and fans will remember for years to come.

The Lady Dawgs traveled to Columbus last week for the Elite Eight round of the state playoffs. Their championship hopes came to an end Saturday morning when they fell to the Wheeler County Bulldogs from Alamo, 5-1. The victory sent Wheeler County to the state championship game against Trion. Trion defeated Wheeler later Saturday to capture the Class A State Championship.

Despite the final loss, ECI has plenty to celebrate. The Lady Dawgs captured another region championship with a perfect 6-0 region record and finished the season with an impressive 24-9 overall record. They also advanced to the Elite Eight for the eighth consecutive year and finished among the final three Class A teams in the state.

Before we get into the games in Columbus, the following are comments from head softball coach Frank Wimblerly about his 2026 Lady Dawgs Softball Team.

“As always, you run into good pitching in Columbus, and you have to take advantage of every opportunity. We outscored our opponents 21-6 but missed pushing runners across in some key situations. A lot of first year starters are new to their positions this season. I am extremely proud of how they performed. One of the most “together” team we’ve ever had and that’s saying a lot considering the groups we’ve had in the past.”

“Obviously you’ll want to talk about the incredible career of Mary Katherine Durden. Pitching throughout the season has kept us competitive and gave the younger players the time they needed to develop for us to make this incredible run. Six of the seven regular season losses came against higher classification teams who ended up in Columbus. This team sputtered quite a bit early but finished the regular season defeating Vidalia and Jeff Davis who finished second and third in Class AA, in back-to-back days.”

“Can’t say enough about the leaders at the top who kept this team together through the ups and downs. Our two seniors A’jlah and MK, really leaned into the “serve” mindset towards their teammates. It is unbelievable how that became so contagious throughout the program! This group raised the standard of the program, and I think these next few seasons, every team will be chasing the chemistry this team had!”

ECI opened tournament play Wednesday afternoon against Johnson County. The Trojans took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out home run. The Lady Dawgs managed a couple of hits and a walk in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to push a run across.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Mary Katherine Durden led off with a single and came around to score on a double by Senaria Hillman. The two seniors teamed up again in the fourth inning. With Ajlah Nobles reaching base on a walk, Durden delivered a single two batters later to bring Nobles home and tie the game at 2-2.

Durden settled in and allowed just two more hits over the final four innings. Meanwhile, the Lady Dawg offense came alive in the sixth, putting together four runs on four hits to secure a 6-2 victory over Johnson County.

The win advanced ECI to a matchup with eventual state champion Trion. It was a classic pitcher's duel, with both teams combining for just five hits and one run.

The only run of the game came in the first inning when Trion took a 1-0 lead. Durden and the Lady Dawg defense kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard the rest of the way, allowing just one hit in each of the second, third, and sixth innings. Unfortunately, the ECI offense could not find the run it needed, and Trion held on for the 1-0 victory.

The loss dropped the Lady Dawgs into the elimination bracket. ECI had been in a similar position a few years ago when the team battled back through the loser’s bracket to capture a state championship. The Bulldogs got off to a strong start in their attempt to repeat that run, defeating Bowdon 10-0 in five innings to set up a matchup with defending state champion Lanier County.

Durden turned in another outstanding performance against Bowdon, throwing a one-hit shutout. The ECI offense backed her up with 12 hits, scoring multiple runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to end the game early.

The Lady Dawgs carried that momentum into Friday's matchup with Lanier County. ECI wasted little time making its presence known, putting four runs on the board in the opening inning.

Durden and Hillman started the inning with back-to-back singles. Charlie Mitchell then delivered the big blow, clearing the bases with a home run over the left-center-field fence to give ECI a 3-0 advantage. Ansley Frye followed with a double and eventually crossed the plate on a Hadleigh Henry single, extending the lead to 4-0.

That was all the support Durden needed. She and the Lady Dawg defense held the defending state champions to just three hits, shutting out Lanier County 4-0 and keeping ECI's championship hopes alive.

The victory set up a Saturday morning elimination game against Wheeler County, with the winner advancing to the state championship game against Trion. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs from Alamo ended the Lady Dawgs' season with a 5-1 victory. Final statistics and a line score were not available for the contest.

The Lady Dawgs will have some big shoes to fill heading into next season. ECI graduates two seniors, pitcher Mary Katherine Durden and right fielder Ajlah Nobles, both of whom played important roles in another successful season. Their leadership and contributions will certainly be missed.

However, if history has taught us anything about the ECI softball program, it is that the tradition continues. The next group of Lady Dawgs will have an opportunity to step up, carry on the winning tradition, and pursue another region championship and postseason run.

Congratulations to the Lady Dawgs on another memorable season!
