Kenny Griffin announced this week his candidacy for Emanuel County Commissioner, District 1. Griffin is a well-known figure in Emanuel County and surrounding areas. He and his wife, Jean, are the proud parents of two daughters and proud grandparents of five grandchildren. Both families reside in the Atlanta area. The candidate began his professional career with Georgia Power-Plant Vogtle construction in 1981 and worked his way up during his 36-year career to Manager of the local offices of Georgia Power in Swainsboro and Metter. He retired in 2017.
Griffin’s knowledge of Emanuel County reflects his involvement in many civic organizations and leadership positions. Among those are the Swainsboro Rotary Club where he served as President,
Southeastern Technical College, Past Chairman of the Board and current Board member, Past President of the Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce, Emanuel Arts Council Chairman, Magnolia Midlands GYSTC Board Chairman, Board Member of The Sunshine House, Board Member of the Sudie A. Fulford Learning Center, and current member of the Emanuel County Joint Development Authorities.
In addition to his many positions in serving his community, Kenny also serves as Pastor of the Brannen Chapel United Methodist Church/Statesboro and is an Officer and member of Branch 5159 of the Emanuel County NAACP. From 1976 to 1980, Griffin served in the United States Army, followed by 4 years of service in the Georgia Army National Guard. During this time, he also completed work on a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia.
Asked what he thinks he can bring to this job, Mr. Griffin replied, “What I have learned in my experience with all the different positions I have held is the importance of listening and the value of respect for everyone. That is the key to making things work. I also believe in the power of “please and thank-you”. That is what I would hope to bring in representing the voices of all the people in District 1.”
The District 1 election will be held March 12, 2024 with early voting beginning February 19.
