Hummingbirds are back

Posted

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have arrived in Swainsboro. The first sighting was reported in Ogburn Subdivision on Thursday, March 9. Prior to this, the earliest reported sighting in Emanuel County was March 16 in 2013, 2016, and 2021.

People often ask if they come back to the same yard every year and the answer is yes. Most return to the same feeders and gardens to breed year after year. What’s more, they often stop at the same spot along the way and arrive on the same date. Their ranges go as far north as Canada.

A Hummer’s menu includes such insects as ants, aphids, fruit flies, gnats, weevils, beetles, mites, and mosquitos. Directions for making safe hummingbird food are as follows: Mix 1-part sugar with 4 parts water. Do not add red dye. Change feeders every other day and thoroughly clean them each time to prevent harmful mold growth.
