Honoring Heroes in Oak Park

The crisp morning air of Saturday, December 11, carried a sense of reverence as residents gathered at the Oak Park Community Center for the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony. Under the direction of Mayor Mickey Lindsey, the event began at 8 a.m., uniting the community in remembrance of those who served.

Mayor Lindsey opened the ceremony with heartfelt words, setting a tone of gratitude and reflection. The solemn notes of Taps, played by Jeanne Griffin, echoed through the crowd, stirring quiet emotion. Everyone joined together to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, a powerful reminder of the freedoms safeguarded by the sacrifices of veterans.

Pastor Jimmy Cason then stepped forward, delivering an inspiring message that paid tribute to the courage and dedication of those laid to rest. His words resonated deeply, reminding all in attendance of the importance of honoring the past while carrying its lessons into the future.

Following the ceremony, guests shared fellowship over warm coffee and fresh donuts, lovingly served by Cindy Powell and other dedicated women of the community.

The morning concluded with the placement of 86 wreaths across the Oak Park City Cemetery and surrounding cemeteries. Each wreath stood as a symbol of respect, gratitude, and enduring memory—a promise that the sacrifices of veterans will never be forgotten.
