The May-June exhibition at The Kalmanson Gallery of Emanuel Arts Council will feature the art of Jason Hoelscher, Gallery Director and Professor of Art at Georgia Southern University. An opening reception will be held May 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Hoelscher is a painter, writer, and professor focused on the dynamics of attention and visual information intake. With a PhD in aesthetic philosophy from IDSVA, an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in New York, and a BFA in painting and drawing from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Hoelscher has also earned certificates in complex systems science, information theory, and network modeling from the New England Complex Systems Institute in Boston, and in design thinking from Harvard Business School Online.
Hoelscher’s exhibitions range from gallery and museum shows in Miami, Los Angeles, Denver, Atlanta, NYC and elsewhere in the U.S., to Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, Hong Kong, and elsewhere internationally, as well as residencies and curatorial projects in Siena, Shanghai, and Marseilles. An active public artist, Hoelscher has created large-scale art installations at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and has written for ARTnews, ArtPulse, ArtCore Journal, Burnaway, The Wall Street Journal, and other print and online publications. His book Art as Information Ecology: Artworks, Artworlds, and Complex Systems Aesthetics (Duke University Press, 2021), combines information theory and aesthetic philosophy to explore art as a complex system of open-ended information, and was nominated for book-of-the-year awards by the American Society of Aesthetics, the College Art Association, and the Association for the Study of the Art of the Present.
